Pennycook described it as embarrassing and highlighted that the Prime Minister chose to double down on a proven lie during the interview. Pennycook emphasized the significance of the D-day commemorations, especially for the veterans in attendance. He questioned why the Prime Minister felt it was appropriate to leave the service to conduct the interview. In contrast, Labour leader Keir Starmer stayed at the service, meeting veterans and international leaders like President Macron and President Zelenskiy. Pennycook stressed the importance of honoring the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the country during the 80th anniversary of D-day. He expressed his hope that the commemorations would not be overshadowed by politics.
