Rockville Centre Diocese Reaches $323 Million Settlement for Child Sexual Abuse Survivors

The Rockville Centre diocese in Long Island, New York, has reached a significant bankruptcy settlement, agreeing to pay over $323 million to approximately 530 survivors of child sexual abuse. These individuals alleged that they were abused by priests during their childhoods. Initially, the diocese, which serves around 1.2 million Catholics in Nassau and Suffolk counties, expressed doubts about the feasibility of a bankruptcy settlement after survivors rejected a prior offer of $200 million earlier this year. However, the new agreement marks a crucial step in addressing the claims of the victims.
