Victoria's Landcare groups are supported by 60,000 volunteers, but there are concerns about the availability of funds to sustain their efforts. Despite a growing interest in local environmental initiatives, the volunteer network is facing financial challenges that are hindering their progress. Lyn Heenan has been involved with Landcare for nearly four decades, inspired by her late father's participation in the movement back in the 1980s. The initiative was launched by then conservation minister Joan Kirner and the Victorian Farmers Federation in 1986 in response to the rabbit infestation in the Pyrenees region of western Victoria. The lack of financial support is a major obstacle for Landcare groups, despite the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers on the ground. Without adequate funding, the growth and impact of these local environmental projects may be limited. It is crucial to address the funding issue to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of Victoria's Landcare groups and to support the valuable work being done by volunteers in the community.
