Treasury questions Sunak’s £2,000 tax claim in election debate

During the first TV debate between Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister claimed that 'independent Treasury officials' had stated that Labour would raise taxes for every family by £2,000. However, the Treasury has queried this claim. The debate was watched by around 4.8 million people on ITV, a figure lower than the 6.7 million viewers during the 2019 general election debate. Other popular programs airing at the same time included The Great British Sewing Bee, England Women's football, Love Island, and Into the Amazon with Robson Green.
