Four former British & Irish Lions players have been identified as part of a legal action against World Rugby, the Rugby Football Union (RFU), and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) over claims of brain injuries sustained while playing the sport. The players—Lee Byrne, Gareth Cooper, Harry Ellis, and Phil Greening—toured with the Lions between 2001 and 2009 and are among a total of 43 players whose identities have been disclosed after their lawyers withdrew a request for anonymity following a recent court hearing. In addition to the Lions players, the group includes Heather Stirrup, a World Cup-winning England player, and several former international players such as Scotland’s David Denton, Wales’s Jonathan Thomas, Iestyn Thomas, Chris Horsman, and Nic Evans, as well as former England Sevens captain Kris Chesney. Two additional players had initially sought anonymity but later decided to withdraw their claims. The law firm Rylands Garth is representing a total of 394 rugby union players, with an additional 350 players having signed engagement letters to join the legal action.
